I’d like to talk about the one entity that is responsible for our existence, our lives, our homes, our jobs…
There is a reason she is called ‘Mother Earth’. She is responsible for all we have as humans. Without her we would be nothing. As a pagan I can’t ignore this fact. The land is why my heart beats with meaning, it brings me all I love and I am able to set my eyes on a beautiful sunset or moonrise, canyons and plains, mountains and streams…
I watched ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ last night. Now I don’t like Al Gore, I never have.
But I love this planet we have been able to live on, I want it to remain so I can show my children the beauty my soul was blessed to observe across this nation and the world. I don’t know what I would do if the great smokey mountains weren’t there to show my children, or the waterfalls I swam in and climbed were not there.
I don’t know what I would do if I wasn’t able to show them the great rocky mountains or go camping in the summer because it was too hot to go outside.
Yes we do have a while before this happens, before it gets ‘really bad’ but why wait until the house is rolling in flames to extinguish a small fire on the stove?
It’s simple to change, to save our only mother.
Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl)
Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer
Clean or replace filters on your furnace and air conditioner
Install a programmable thermostat
Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible
Turn off electronic devices you’re not using
Unplug electronics from the wall when you’re not using them
-We can all do these things. Honestly it’s not crazy or impossible. In fact most of these things would only take a day, at most to fix, maybe two. We made the decision to buy a Toyota ( which currently has the best fuel efficiency rating on the market) and we bought a truck. Americans are very attached to their vehicles and balk at the idea of giving them up but we can get the vehicle we need/ want and still do good for the environment.
Indeed this is a human issue that needs political power to impliment some very important changes.
As a Celt I realized the severity of this.If the polar ice caps start to melt and sea level rises, all the places that hold Celtic culture, the language and the lore will be gone. The land is so crucial to Celtic life.
But we don’t have a responsibility here because we are pagans. We have a responsibility because we are human beings on planet earth. And this is our only home.
Alarmist action isn’t what is necessary that would hurt us more I think. What we need is planned, responsible action from myself and from you.
