I very happily stumbled across the band Albannach today while listening to the Irish and Celtic Music podcast ( which I love). They are a drum and pipe band but not your grandfather’s drum and pipe band. Words really fail me to describe what they do to me….how they wake up my blood.
The Scottish side of my family is very old. We are of the McCulloch line and I don’t talk about them much because I don’t really know who they were, the part of my family which knows the most doesn’t speak to me anymore. But I figure that line is rousing my blood right now as I listen to their music.
I used to sing at a high level in high school and college but stopped and now generally only sing once a year at Samhain…..their song “Ancestors” would make me pick it up again it’s that powerful .( have a listen on their site. It’s on their first album) Here are the words.
Hear my voice blowing on the breeze,
Know your fate know your history,
As I am now you one day will be,
Face your past then face your destiny,
Now you may live a different place,
Brought up and lived a different way,
But if you have our blood in your veins,
Then you will know us, know home, know who you are.
Now here you are, standing next to me,
Come take my hand, and walk with me,
If you could feel the peace in our hills and glens,
You would know in swear with all begin
and you would know who I really am.
